Shop Small Business Saturday

Sharing my post on tada! shop. Support your favorite local store!

Buy Local and from small businessesThis year, tada! shop is doing something a little different for Black Friday. We’re not having one. Call it Anti-Black Friday, opting out or simply being a conscious consumer, but we won’t be featuring special ad promotions and sales during the busiest shopping day of the year. Instead, for the next three weeks, you’ll find a carefully chosen selection of gifts that are ethically sourced, made locally, sustainable and, best of all, give back. Share the love and add these items to your gift list this year! Our last post in the series is about buying local.

It’s not just about supporting Small Business Saturday (November 28), it’s about being a conscious consumer throughout the year. Navigating through artisan-filled cities can be daunting so I asked a few friends and colleagues, all with an eye for the unique and fun, to share an insider guide on the best places for holiday gift shopping. Think handcrafted and creative gifts for family and friends, as well as few treats for yourself. From the tastiest olive oil and ice cream, to the small-batch curators of clothing and ceramics, here’s how to shop like a local.

Karin’s favorite places to buy gifts are in the neighborhood of Boreum Hill, Brooklyn and are all quite close to Acorn.

86 Hoyt St. | Brooklyn, NY 11201 | 718.222.1933
Layla is a gem of a shop filled with gorgeous handcrafted fine jewelry, clothing, housewares and bedding from India. The towels and napkins are my go-to gifts.

103 Hoyt St. | Brooklyn NY 11217 | 718.797.3628
GRDN is a specialty garden and home store filled with beauty for inside and out. Favorite gifts are the Saipua soaps, beeswax candles and Bellocq teas.

The Primary Essentials
372 Atlantic Ave. | Brooklyn, NY 11217 | 718.522.1804
This shop has an inspiring mix of special objects for the home and body. I adore their ceramics collection!

bar-holly-700x30Bronagh Staley, Sweet William
When she’s not curating artisan and hipster children’s clothing for Sweet William, you can find Bronagh sourcing the best gifts from her local community.

85 North 3rd St. | Brooklyn, NY 11249 | 718.387.9006
KCDC is a great skateboard store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s been in the neighborhood for years and I have been bringing my son there since he started skating at four. They always make him feel like part of the gang.

Mohawk General Store
4011 W. Sunset Blvd. | Los Angeles, CA 90029 | 323.669.1601
In LA, I love Mohawk General Store in Silverlake. It has a really well curated selection of women’s clothing.

1639 Silver Lake Blvd. | Los Angeles, CA 90026 | 323.913.9911
There is a great dessert spot in Silverlake called MILK. My husband loves it because of its range of butterscotch flavored desserts.

bar-holly-700x30JoAnn Crohn, Whimsicle
JoAnn knows how to make mom life fun as you can see on her blog Whimsicle. When she’s not crafting and cooking, you might find her in one of these local spots in Arizona.

Queen Creek Olive Mill
25062 S. Meridian Rd. | Queen Creek, AZ 85142 | 480.888.9290
Shop and taste a variety of locally grown olive oils as well as local wines, vinegars and even a selection of olive oil spa products.

Peixoto Coffee
11 W Boston St #6 | Chandler, AZ 85225 | 480.275.2843
One of my favorite places on the planet. All of the coffee served here comes directly from the owner’s family farm in Brazil. Purchase a bag of beans, coffee soap or stamped coasters.

51 East Boston | Chandler, AZ 85225 | 480.664.8641
The best assortment of natural baby and mama supplies! Shop here for the cutest baby clothes, bibs, books as well as harder to find items such as teething necklaces and cloth diapers.

bar-holly-700x30Sarah Shaoul, Black Wagon
When she’s not at curating hipster clothing and toys at Black Wagon, you might find Sarah seeking chocolates and baubles at these shops.

3556 SE Hawthorne Blvd. | Portland, OR 97214 |503.208.3008
This is where I love to shop for myself and I know I’ll always find something that I love for myself and my husband! Communion carries a vast range of men’s and women’s essentials as well as signature pieces. I love picking up Pendleton shirts for my husband and tunics, tops and dresses for myself! My husband and kids often pick up jewelry for me at Communion. Love their jewelry! This is also where I picked up a gift certificate for Black Wagon’s operations manager to celebrate her ten years at Black Wagon!

3948 N Mississippi Ave. | Portland, OR 97227 | 503.288.1649
I like to describe Flutter as a French bohemian explosion. This lovely boutique does an amazing job of intermingling lovely vintage fashion finds with modern pieces like pillows, candles, fragrances and great collection of jewelry and coffee table books. Flutter is my go to place to score gifts for my girl friends! I can always rely on finding something my friends will love at Flutter!

The Meadow
3731 N Mississippi Ave. | Portland, OR 97227 | 503.288.4633
The Meadow is best known for their amazing selection of salts. My favorite is the alder wood salt, deep and smokey, this salt will transform any dish. In addition to salts, the Meadow has an impressive selection of specialty chocolate bars! Between their salts and chocolates, I always find great gifts for friends, customers and dare say, myself!

General Store
4035 Judah St. | San Francisco, CA 94122 | 415.682.0600
Never underestimate how handy a beautiful piece of wood can be. Live-edge wood slabs can be used as cutting boards, yes, but can also double as a cheese board or serving platter.

She also loves gift shopping at:

A non-profit organization that has some of the most interesting and delicious hands-on classes as well as curated dinners from local restaurants and cafes. Some of my favorites include tomato canning and chocolate tastings. When you stop by, be sure to get a scoop next door at Bi-Rite Creamery.

The Cheese School
2124 Folsom St. | San Francisco, CA 94110 | 415.346.7530

Parties That Cook
271 Francisco St. | San Francisco, CA 94133 | 888.907.2665
You’ll see this place marketed more as a corporate-building venue, but they also offer cooking classes for individuals. I’ve made many of the recipes and can tell you that the dishes are sure-fire hits at gatherings.

Paint Nite
All over San Francisco
For your creative social friends, they’ll love this traveling painting party. Select the art and enjoy a glass of wine at a local venue. Tip: Sign up with a group of friends.
